CORROSION RESISTANT LINERS

Three basic methods can be employed to protect

SUPERPRESSURE Reaction Vessels

against corrosion:

1. Vessels and accessories may be built entirely of corrosion-resistant metals and alloys.
2. Removable Pyrex liners
3. Permanent metal liners.

PERMANENT LINERS

Permanent Liners may be fabricated and expanded into the pressure vessel. Almost any suitable metal may be used for such liners, and the design of each is special. This construction is limited by the temperature at which the liner may deform and it should be noted that this type of liner can not be removed without destroying it.


REMOVABLE LINERS

Removable liners have been used widely and are now considered essential equipment for high-pressure laboratories. Since catalytic effects are important in high-pressure processes,

Pyrex liners

are often used in exploratory research.
Each Pyrex liner is fitted with a ground-glass stopper containing a thermowell guard.
Suitable springs are supplied to keep them snug in the reaction vessel.
The Pyrex liner contains a small vent hole which serves as a pressure equalizer to allow the heavy walls of the reaction vessel (not the liner) to take the pressure load. Since removable liners are used chiefly in shaking-tyoe reaction vessels, this pin hole is located midway between the ends of the liner, so that if the liner is placed horizontally in the shaker with the pin hole upward, liquid will not splash out during shaking. This pin hole precludes the possibility of filling the liner more than half full if liquid is not to leak out during filling.
